June 2017 – Emulate Success

Emulate Success  <Career>

We all define success differently, for some of us, it may be power and position, for others, money, and still for others, peace of mind and purpose. Or perhaps a combination of all the aforementioned. However you define success, I believe there are a few common denominators in finding that success:

  • Figure out what it is that you want. Going back to the first sentence in this article, it is crucial to determine what exactly it is that you personally define as success. This is the most important step. In fact, one of my future articles will be focused specifically on this subject. In the meantime however, take my word for it, you need to know exactly where you want to go before you can get there. Be as specific as possible. For example, “I want a promotion at work” is too general. On the other hand, “My goal is to be promoted to Manager at XYZ Corporation by June 2018, and in order to realize this goal I am willing to take ABC actions as part of my daily responsibilities” is a much more specific and powerful statement.
  • Emulate those who have found success. Once you figure out what it is that you want, find others who are already there or already have those things, and emulate their behavior and actions. It is a common and natural reaction to feel jealous or envious of others. We are hardwired to believe there are only finite resources on earth, only a limited number of promotions, only so much to go around. To find success you need to think broader than this. When one of your co-workers is promoted or finds a great new job opportunity, be genuinely happy for them. Once you are in a positive and honest place in your thoughts, you’ll find that you are more open to noticing what actions got that individual to where they are. Maybe they show up for work early every day and stay late, maybe they dress one level up, or maybe the quality of their works speaks for itself… All things you may have overlooked previously. Whatever it is, mimic those behaviors and characteristics, make them part of your daily routine and keep your eye on your ultimate goal.
  • Lift others. Lift others and you shall be lifted. Wait, what? Haha I just thought that sounded somewhat epic and cool. On a serious note, nobody in this world gets to where they are on their own. Everyone needs a bit of help at one point or another. As you are looking out for your own career and your own best interests, make yourself available to others as well. Stay focused on your goals but be willing to help others. Volunteer and take the extra step to lend a helping hand when you see someone in need. I very much believe in you get what you give, and this applies to the workplace as well. There are no shortcuts, you need to put in the effort, however that effort can feel much lighter and easier when you have a supportive team that is there for one another.

Good Luck Have Fun (GLHF!) on following the above advice. Whether you are just starting off in your career or are already managing a global division, I do believe you will find these basic principles will lead you further down the path of success.

Halo 5, The Gift That Keeps on Giving  <Gaming>

LOTS of good games out right now, I am working on Final Fantasy XV, Halo Wars 2, and Gears of War 4 (talk about sequel mania). I should mention I am a big Xbox fanatic so most games I refer to are on the Xbox One console. Even with all those games in-progress however, I keep on going back to Halo 5. The multiplayer is intense!!! Team Arena is my preference, the matches are 4 vs 4, and in my opinion the Capture The Flag game type far exceeds the others. I am currently Level 145… I am told that progress becomes exponentially more difficult at that level… For ex, say if Lvl 1 – 144 takes 480 hours of actual cumulative game time… well just getting from Level 145 – 146 actually takes that same amount of time, and then 146 – 147 takes twice that…. and so on…… good thing it is an awesome game. 🙂

Have some coffee while you are gaming!
